Gohan's Birthday Hike

He is "84" today. We took him up toward the Continental Divide above the East Portal to the Moffat Tunnel. It's just 15 minutes from our house.

Phoenix Ghost Town

Since we moved up here I've been dying to ride up to Phoenix, the abandoned mine marked "ghost town" on my trail map. We finally got to go. It was a great ride - very challenging though; seven miles with a 1000 ft summit climb in the middle. Great views at the top! The mine was a little disappointing, but we may go back and investigate later. We took a different route home - pretty much straight down! I had a hard time keeping my bike from sliding.

Old Mill in Nederland, CO

It was used to mill silver. "Ned," as we call it, is the closest town to our new house in Rollinsville. The house is coming along well. My parents came out to help work on it for a week. As of now, the top two floors are finished, giving us a kitchen, two bathrooms and three bedrooms.

Baby Snowshoe Hares

We found these guys under our house when we were flipping the insulation. They have really big back feet. So cute. So soft. So sad not to get to keep a box of bunnies for cuddling, but we had to put them back.

DIY Coffee Pods

Here's How:
1. Save an empty, large coffee can or find another suitably sized container.
2. Put a filter in the bottom of the can and dump in a measure of your favorite grounds.
3. Keep stacking filters filled with grounds until you have filled the can.
(This takes me about 5 minutes and makes about a two week supply.)
4. Enjoy the convenience of pre-filled, pre-measured filters.
Those new pod coffee makers have become a pet peeve of mine. Originally I thought, "Wow! That's so convenient." But when I saw how much they cost per pod (more than your average cup of coffee from some places) I was annoyed. Then I started thinking about the packaging waste in our landfills. Those plastic and aluminum pods aren't going to break down anytime soon, unlike standard filters. Sure it doesn't have the same snob appeal as the latest and greatest coffee pods, but making your own pods will save time, money and space in our overtaxed landfills. I'm not the first to consider the environmental impact of coffee pods. Even Keurig admits that this is a real issue. Read more about that here.
