DIY Coffee Pods

Here's How:
1. Save an empty, large coffee can or find another suitably sized container.
2. Put a filter in the bottom of the can and dump in a measure of your favorite grounds.
3. Keep stacking filters filled with grounds until you have filled the can.
(This takes me about 5 minutes and makes about a two week supply.)
4. Enjoy the convenience of pre-filled, pre-measured filters.
Those new pod coffee makers have become a pet peeve of mine. Originally I thought, "Wow! That's so convenient." But when I saw how much they cost per pod (more than your average cup of coffee from some places) I was annoyed. Then I started thinking about the packaging waste in our landfills. Those plastic and aluminum pods aren't going to break down anytime soon, unlike standard filters. Sure it doesn't have the same snob appeal as the latest and greatest coffee pods, but making your own pods will save time, money and space in our overtaxed landfills. I'm not the first to consider the environmental impact of coffee pods. Even Keurig admits that this is a real issue. Read more about that here.

ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY: PREPARE

The pangolin spent much of her time putting up ant and termite preserves to prepare for the rainy season.
This is the first work I've done with the liquid watercolors Lexi sent me for my birthday. Thanks Lexi!!
Pangolins are very cool. They're kind of like an armoured anteater. Unfortunately, they're going extinct because of their snob appeal as a food and a belief in Asia that they can serve as an exotic form of Viagra. So sad! Pop pills - NOT pangolins! Click here to learn more about pangolins and support their conservation.
If kids are more your speed than pangolins, click here to help my underprivileged elementary art students!

GROUNDED: Illustration Friday

The little stump house with its gnarled roots clutching at the earth, was well grounded indeed.

Jeff's Dog Mittens

I've been busy over Christmas break, mostly working with all of the wool I managed to collect while hiking during the summer. I made felt in the washing machine and from that I've been making mittens. The two little piles at the top are mountain goat wool, Gohan the dog wool is at the bottom left and the pile at the bottom right is buffalo wool. Lots of fun!
